Small Business Solutions
Web development languages PHP, Perl, JavaScript (and what that entails like JSON, AJAX) are the specialties but also Rails and Java (not primarily). Data coding with MySQL, Postgres and XML (or delimited files such as CSV). Obviously HTML4+ or you wouldn't be reading this. Yes I do WordPress. Anyone can install it so if you really want to pay me to do so I'll take your money. If you need the theme manipulated or a custom theme I can do that as well. Where I really excel is creating custom plug-ins and widgets. For people who are used to getting things for free the price tag can be a shocker - the minimum fee for creating a simply custom plug-in is going to be about $100 and that one won't do much. Just being up-front.
Say you have an idea ... a thought. You have this amazing idea of how to use an online site to create a local community conversation, similar to Facebook but much smaller, and you don't know where to begin. Or perhaps you just need a membership site and classified section for your local 1500 member club. What if you just need a pitch page to tell someone about your product, service or opportunity and want them to be encouraged to request more information? Consider it done.
Every small business owner needs a way to source, attract and connect with new and existing clients. There are literally hundreds of "out of the box" web solutions but too often none of them are adequate or customisable enough to work for every business. For example how are a nail salon, a car dealer, a restaurant, and a landscape service related enough to use the same solution as may be provided by an accounting software or yellow paper directory? The answer is "they aren't". Too many times small business owners think having a custom designed solution is too cost prohibitive when, in fact, a custom designed solution is generally less costly than any of the above mentioned.
Case Examples
Tina owns a small hair salon in a growing community. She has a couple of stations she leases to other stylists and she sees her own clients, too. Tina is not always too busy to answer the phone and book appointments but for a good part of her day she may have her hands full and not be able to stop in the middle of, say, a color wash. She has seen solutions advertised that would take a phone call, give a choice of times let the client choose their time, leave a message and book online. The system would e-mail the client a confirmation and send a text message to Tina (or e-mail) and let her know a client has booked. All while Tina is doing what she does best, talking about the kids' new achievements with Doris. Now she knows iCobb can do that for a fraction of the "big guy's" cost.
Riordan just graduated from college with a degree in architectural design. He built his website using some WYSIWIG software and it looks pretty good. He even found a couple of plug-ins to accept e-mail and send tweets. The thing is he can't find his own site in a search using his own keywords. He got a price from one of those yes-sir SEO companies that charges 2 legs and an arm but there is no way he can afford to have someone send a few tweets and Facebook posts for that price. After a short conversation it was determined the solution would be about 30% of the price he had been quoted to have a custom solution tailored and administered for him.
It's Not Always About Costs
Sometimes there are solutions people are seeking which are prohibitive not because of cost but because a developer will not take the time to really listen to what the client (you) needs. Clients don't always know what developers can do to make engagement work. That's why we will listen, ask questions and work with you to ensure you are getting the end result you are looking for. Simple? Simple!
